As always, I’m making this album available for free as well as it being on all streaming platforms. I never want money to be a barrier to people enjoying and owning the music.
But as I’m sure you’ll appreciate, making records is expensive. Session players need to be fairly paid. Equipment needs to be bought and maintained. Food needs to be put on the table.
If you’re able to, please consider donating for this music through the link below. It doesn’t matter how much; everything helps to keep the lights on. Enough for a coffee would be ample. My dream is that donations for this album might help it to ‘break even’ so that I’m better placed to make another. So, if you might consider dropping a couple of coins in the jar, I cannot tell you how much I would appreciate that.
The Making Of
I’m pleased to announce that my new album Situation will be released on 24 July 2026.
This is my first full-length record in nearly a decade. You see, life has been busy. Day jobs have done that thing where time disappears. My health has been iffy. My brain doesn’t like me sometimes. But after a bumpy few years, this is an album felt I had to make.
The resulting music is even more diverse than before. It’s more extreme. Unpredictable. Intense. Layered. Destructive. A few songs are playful. More than a few come from difficult places. There’s an eight-minute folk-rock epic about a Scottish aircraft. There’s a tuba. I attempted to play metal. (Yeah, you can guess how that went.)
But whilst keeping the old-school aesthetic to which I always stay true – records to me just sounded better back then – this album was also created with the most modern of collaborative methods. Through the miracle of everybody having their own studios and giant files being sharable at the click of a mouse, I collaborated with over 30 different players from all over the world to bring the music to life – only a couple of whom I was sat in the room with. (Full credits for each track are below.) There are musicians from Malaysia, Argentina, Colombia, Slovenia, Ukraine…and everywhere in between.
Oh yeah, and Billy Sheehan is on there too. What a legend.
Situation is a global creation. And I hope you enjoy it.
All instruments on this song (and the whole Situation album) were performed by real musicians; all of whom have tirelessly pursued their craft and developed genuinely creative ears and unique styles. There is no use of MIDI programming, autotune, audio quantisation or copy-paste samples anywhere – and, in particular, it is a record proudly untouched by AI. Thank you for seeking out genuine, independent artistry created by human beings; and for enjoying something that exists purely for the love of creation and self-expression shared by those who made it.
All songs written, recorded, produced and mixed by Joe Perkins.
Primary engineer: Joe Perkins (all session players engineered their own instruments)
Mastered by Björn Engelmann at The Cutting Room, Stockholm.
Design & Photography by Gwendalyn Webb.
